GS1 - Mobile Codes Consortium

I actually do not read any of it the press release.
But if you want my opinion: UPC/EAN (predecessor of GS1) never really cared about the 2D codes and for a while pushed the RSS14 in Retail but this failed. Then they merged with the MIT Auto-ID center forming the GS1 really pushing the EPC RFID standard. Guess all the opportunities for the 2D barcodes woke them up but I guess the IATA standard allready shows us where we are heading: Aztec, DataMatrix and Aztec codes are the standards for pull- and push barcoding these 3 will be the standards. Funny enough I hear that 2D codes now also are being adopted in closed retail environments.

GS1 missed the boat in 2D by putting the cards on the wrong standard, they take care of the 1D UPC- and EAN standards well now and the EPC RFID standard (future). Don't see their added value at all in the M2C. I also doubt their contribution will bring the mobile barcode to a next level, they do not understand mobile and should stick to what they are good at.

The internet- and mobile industry is very transparent. If a company or organisation does not add value -in this case the GS1- this part of the value chain will be deleted.

I would like to add some comments regarding GS1 and answer to Ron on this point.

GS1 has specified the Datamatrix since quite a time and its usage is well documented in the Gen Specs (you need to ask GS1 for the latest vesion of the document). However you can access this other document on internet:

_technical_overview.pdf

Moreover, GS1 has created a specific mobile commerce commitee in 2007 to discuss with all the actors of the domain about what should be done to let the mobile commerce really take off.
I can only send you to the specific pages : http://www.gs1

To my opinion, GS1 is really adding a lot of value to the mobile commerce by helping developping new standards in that domain and the 2D barcodes are absolutely not left behind. It is a chance that a worldwide organisation is pulling the different actors (telcos, mobile phones manufacturers, industries, retailers, consumer association, ...) toward a same vision.

Take also a look at the position taken with regards to the 2D barcodes available on the market: http://www.gs1
